Heidelberg Conference 2009

The EAHMH recently concluded another highly successful conference.  The conference was on the theme 'Global and Local Specificities in the History of Medicine and Health' and took place in the beautiful city of Heidelberg, Germany in the excellent facilties of the University of Heidelberg.  For a copy of the conference programme click here and for the abstracts of papers click here.

The conference was attended by over 100 delegates from 18 different countries.  Excellent plenary lectures by Professor Hal Cook on the importance of acquaintances in the early modern medical world; Professor Marcos Cueto on the WHO and the implementation of primary care in Latin America and Africa; Professor Walter Bruchhausen on export and adaptation, import and integration in East African health care; and Professor Anne Hardy on travel, trade and the salmonellas, truly spanned the local and the global.  There were also 21 individual sessions, with papers covering a huge range of topics, time periods and geographical locations.  A packed programme was rounded off by a boat trip on the River Neckar which coincided with the September castle illuminations and fireworks. For a visitor's impression of the conference, read Professor Steven Palmer's blog on his Cultures of Health website.

Thanks to all those who participated in the conference, and particularly to the organisers Volker Roelcke (Giessen), Philipp Osten (Heidelberg), Wolfgang Eckart (Heidelberg) and the team of student helpers who made the conference run so smoothly.
